Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus was one of the most important Eastern Roman emperors who ruled with an iron fist and firm determination over the Byzantine Empire (and beyond) from A.D. 527 to 565.
He is mainly known for his relentless efforts to restore a unified Roman Empire (Restauratio Imperii) by reconquering the territories of the former Western Roman Empire, which collapsed in 476.
He is also famous for his legislative reforms, particularly for compiling the Corpus Iuris Civilis, a monumental work that systematized Roman law and still serves as the foundation of modern legal systems.
From an economic perspective, he promoted extensive building activities throughout the Empire, including the construction of the magnificent Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
