There are historical figures famous for their diplomacy, others for having contributed to the advancement of human society, and then there is Enrico Dandolo, the man who turned the Fourth Crusade into a golden opportunity to increase Venice’s influence.
Despite being old and blind, the venerable Doge saw farther than anyone, leading the Christian fleet to Constantinople, where he orchestrated a turbulent yet swift regime change. This shirt captures his indomitable spirit as he proudly sports a crimson cap bearing the inscription "Make the Serenissima Great Again!"
THE GREATEST DOGE
Enrico Dandolo (1107-1205) was one of the shrewdest and most ambitious Doges of Venice in the history of the Republic. He led the Serenissima through a complex web of alliances and wars, particularly with the empires and powers of the Eastern Mediterranean. Due to his bold political maneuvers, he was excommunicated by the Pope, but in return, he secured an unprecedented level of influence and international projection for the lagoon city.
Venice effectively became a commercial and military empire, establishing itself as a major power in the centuries that followed. Enrico was buried in the Hagia Sophia Cathedral, where he rested in peace until the Turkish conquest of the city. On that occasion, his tomb was destroyed and desecrated.
