Since the Middle Ages, violets have been known for their relaxing properties and calming effects. According to an ancient Persian legend, violet flowers have the power to heal broken hearts.
A SOOTHING BEVERAGE
Violets include over five hundred species, among them the Viola odorata, also known as sweet violet. This spring flower symbolizes rebirth and love, associated with myths of Persephone and Adonis. Used in medicine by the ancient Greeks and Romans, it adorned altars and was a remedy for headaches. Apicius’ cookbook records the creation of "vinum violatum," a wine flavored with honey and violets. Arabs used violet essential oil as a heart tonic, while in the French royal court, violets were cultivated for their fragrant powders. Violets are also renowned for their expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. To balance its strong flavor, we recommend mixing it with tonic water or adding it to gin.
