VALENTINE’S DAY: A MEDIEVAL FEAST
The “Feast of Saint Valentine” was established in A.D. 496 by Pope Gelasius I to commemorate Valentine of Terni, bishop and martyr of the 4th century. Legend has it that Valentine, in his Eucharistic ministry, paid the dowry for a poor maiden who lacked the means to marry. This deed made the Umbrian saint the patron of lovers and the very symbol of love itself.
Veneration for the Saint spread in the centuries that followed through the Benedictine monks, across their many monasteries throughout Europe, becoming especially heartfelt in France and England. The Anglo poet Geoffrey Chaucer, in his work “The Parliament of Fowls”, associated the celebration with the betrothal of Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia, which took place on the 14th of February.
In the late Middle Ages, with the birth and spread of courtly love, it became common to call one’s beloved “Valentina” in honor of the Saint who protects lovers.

A COURTLY GIFT
Which gift should you choose?
The letter is free but cannot be obtained on its own, so it must be paired with a gift. If you need a few ideas for your better half, you’ll find the recommended categories at the bottom.
This year, in the “Sal Valentino” edition, there is also Rosolio, the rose liqueur, with which it will be impossible not to impress!
We also recommend the shirt Pegaso (on offer until February 15) or one of the other models available in the offers section of the site, where we have selected the most popular products for gifts to one’s beloved.
