SYNOPSIS:
Lowering a sail, throwing a line, finding shelter in a bay before bad weather arrives, or else setting foot on land and looking up at Gothic windows and Renaissance balconies.
The Most Serene Republic of Venice is gathered in these and many other images. The purpose of this guide is to bring that past and those landscapes back to life through a contemporary journey.
The result of hundreds of interviews from Bergamo to Cyprus, the book tells the age-old history of the Serenissima through reports, maps, photos, illustrations and recipes.
Following today’s borders and those of the past, it offers a journey in search of the architectural, linguistic, gastronomic and cultural heritage that the Republic has left in its “own” territories.
Without nostalgia or revisionism, Republic of Venice traces a well-documented and enjoyable path through the different interpretations of a shared past.

THE AUTHOR:
Giovanni Vale is a journalist, Zagreb correspondent for numerous Italian and international media outlets, and the author of eight travel guides for various European publishers.
Giovanni is also the creator and promoter of the Extinguished Countries project.
THE PROJECT:
The Extinguished Countries project was created to offer travel guides that explore Vanished States, in search of the legacy of a shared past that has helped shape today’s identity.
At the beginning of 2020, this idea was put to the test with a crowdfunding campaign. The project was launched on Kickstarter and, in just three weeks, received the support of almost 600 people and over 25,000 euros.
After a year of hard work, in the summer of 2021 the first guide in the Extinguished Countries series was printed: Republic of Venice.
