SYNOPSIS:
For over six centuries, up to the end of the First World War, the House of Habsburg ruled over a large part of Europe. The shape of their empire changed greatly over the course of history (at one time it even included Mexico).
At the time of its fall, the Habsburg Empire included parts of 13 contemporary countries: Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Italy.
Our guide will take you through the Alps and along the Danube. You will discover a dynasty that is both fascinating and terrifying at the same time, a multilingual and multicultural society, and a rich history whose legacy is still visible today.
It is a story of epic battles and technological discoveries, of social transformations and revolutions.

THE AUTHOR:
Giovanni Vale is a journalist, Zagreb correspondent for numerous Italian and international media outlets, and the author of eight travel guides for various European publishers.
Giovanni is also the creator and promoter of the Extinguished Countries project.
THE PROJECT:
The Extinguished Countries project was created to offer travel guides that explore Vanished States, in search of the legacy of a shared past that has helped shape today’s identity.
At the beginning of 2020, this idea was put to the test with a crowdfunding campaign. The project was launched on Kickstarter and, in just three weeks, received the support of almost 600 people and over 25,000 euros.
After a year of hard work, in the summer of 2021 the first guide in the Extinguished Countries series was printed: Republic of Venice.
