ROSES IN THE MIDDLE AGES:
In the medieval period, roses were attributed multiple symbolic meanings. In some contexts, for instance, their fragile, delicate petals—quick to wither—were used as a metaphor for the transience of life and its inevitable end.The sense of ephemerality and delicacy associated with these flowers is echoed in Francesco Petrarch, who in the second half of the 14th century refers to roses as a symbol of the fair season and the passage of time: "I saw the ice, and there the rose itself", writes the Italian poet. Another very common meaning was (and still is) that of being guardians of something intimate and secret. In this way, the rose often took shape as an erotic symbol, linked (more or less explicitly) to sexual union, as happens in the 13th-century Roman de la Rose, where it symbolizes the beloved woman, the object of desire.
