Mead is made through the fermentation of honey with water and yeast and can be served at room temperature in winter or chilled in summer.
In pre-Christian times, newlyweds were given a supply of Mead sufficient for the duration of a lunar month to aid in procreation. It was believed that the alcohol content and high sugar levels could help young couples have enough "energy" for their first sexual experiences. From this tradition comes the term "Honeymoon".
Also recognized for its beneficial properties, it is an anti-inflammatory for the gastrointestinal tract and helps combat insomnia and depression, while also strengthening the immune system. When consumed warm, it is useful for respiratory ailments.
MEAD, NECTAR OF THE GODS
The earliest traces of its use date back to ancient Egypt, about 2000 years before Christ. We also have evidence of its use by the Greeks and Romans as a sacred beverage linked to the cult of Dionysus. However, it was the Celtic peoples of Northern Europe who made its use most famous. In pre-Christian times, in both literature and Norse mythology, Mead (mjöðr) was depicted as the drink of kings, favored by Odin and the Gods (Aesir).
