CHINOTIUM, AN AROMATIC BEVERAGE
The history of Chinotto dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was valued not only for its aroma but also for its medicinal properties. Used as a remedy for digestion and ailments, this citrus fruit has over time become a symbol of well-being and Medieval tradition.
The etymology of the term is uncertain, but the most accepted hypothesis is that it derives from the Genoese chinòtte, which in turn might be a distortion of the word China, referencing the plant's oriental origins.
It is believed that Chinotto was brought to Italy from China by Ligurian sailors in the 17th century, which could explain its name. However, the Citrus myrtifolia species developed distinctively in Italy, particularly in Liguria and Tuscany, where it is cultivated for making candied fruits, liqueurs, and the famous beverage.
