THE DARK BEAST OF THE ABYSS
The Kraken is a legendary sea monster of cyclopean size, generally depicted as a gigantic cephalopod similar to a squid or an octopus, which wraps ships with its elongated tentacles until it drags them to the depths.
The legend originated between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, fueled by alleged sightings of various types of sea monsters following the opening of ocean routes and navigation on the high seas. It is very likely that many of these sightings were in fact specimens of giant or colossal squid, yet the legend still lives on today.
In popular culture, the Kraken appears in numerous literary works by Walter Scott and Thomas Love Peacock, as well as in the famous novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, and The Toilers of the Sea by Victor Hugo. Moreover, in "The Lord of the Rings", a giant monster (called "The Watcher in the Water") attacks the fellowship at the gates of Moria.
